Hello guys, in today's book review, I will be sharing my thoughts on Miracle on Cherry Hill by Sun-Mi Hwang.
This is a story that revolves around the world of misunderstandings, hatred and regrets.
We follow a man, Kang Dae-Su back to Cherry Hill where he was staying when he was young with his father and when a tragic accident happened, he was forced to move abroad for adoption. In time, he became successful and owns a construction company but unfortunately, he developed a brain tumour and he decided to come back to this small town where he bought a property to enjoy his remaining life. After he returned, he found many familiar faces and secrets unknown to him.
When Kang Dae-Su came back to Cherry Hill, I would say that he was a man filled with hatred, at least towards the town denizens and because of his past. People of all ages were trespassing into his property and as a result, he decided to impose more restrictions such as having a fence to prevent people from doing so. By doing so, he realised a empty void in him, vegetables going rotten and no one protecting the eggs. Additionally, he slowly developed feelings with the town denizens and those people managed to somehow fill up the void in him. In the end, he realised that the young girl from his past, Song Gi who always seems to dislike him was diagnosed with dementia and truths starts to unfold for him as he explores even more.
I like the story shows how misunderstandings or even abuse can change one person, especially a young boy and his attitude towards life later on. In spite of what he had faced when he was young, this as a result motivates him to achieve greater heights in life. Although he had some regrets at the end, it was too late to do anything but to move on. There is no point harping on the past but rather, to move forward and create a better tomorrow. Furthermore, sometimes, we just got to let go of out hatred. Holding on to hatred would only makes your life worse and revenge is also definitely not the way to ease the hatred in you.. In order to bring out the positivity in it, I would say the best way to cope with hatred is to reflect and learn where you can improve on and ensures that you will not make such mistakes which results in such hatred in the future. It will not be an easy task but it is definitely achievable. One who has lost many would only stand up stronger and not weaker. Overall, I feel that this was brought out clearly and this is something that I feel that we can all reflect and preach on.
This was a good read that definitely warms my heart and give me some pointers to reflects on and I highly recommends it to any readers.
